  Designing Cincinnati's Legendary Main Library:

  A Collaboration between Architect Woodie Garber and Librarian Carl Vitz

  70 years ago, in1955, Cincinnati's new downtown library led the nation in modern design for public libraries. Join us on September 18th and hear the tale of two visionaries who partnered on a massive project: to construct the first major US public library after World War II. Woodie Garber, one of the Queen City ’s leading modernist architects, and librarian Carl Vitz closely collaborated-- and faced many challenges to produce the library we know and enjoy today.

  We are thrilled to host speakers Elizabeth Garber, daughter of Woodie and Robert Vitz, son of Carl, for this special anniversary presentation.

  Trifecta of Greats: Strauss, Roush and Garcia: Westheimer House Coffee Chat
  

   

  In 1953, Carl Strauss and Ray Roush designed a home for Cincinnati philanthropists Charles and May Westheimer and their five children. Sited on steep ridge in Clifton, the house is beautifully integrated to its hillside setting with woods and native plantings. The current owners are only the second family to inhabit this space in 75 years. During their stewardship, they worked with Carl Strauss himself and more recently with Jose Garcia to enlarge spaces, enhance vistas to the outdoors, and add a few rooms -- all in keeping with the original classic MCM design. 

  Join us on Saturday, September 20th for this special opportunity to hear their story, tour the home filled with a fascinating art collection, and trek through the terraced garden filled with native plants, trees, fountains, contemporary sculpture -- and even a putting green!  

  Space is limited to cf3 members.  A reminder that you must register all who are attending in your RSVP. Couple/Dual memberships do not automatically offer you two spaces.

  Please note: Good walking shoes are recommended to peruse the garden. Access to the house involves walking down a short, steep driveway. Parking is limited and may require walking to the home.
