cf3 tour: docomomo tour of Mater Dei Chapel

Docomomo Tour Day 2025 takes place throughout the month of October. The only national event of its kind, Tour Day celebrates modern architecture and design where the public and organizations across the country participate in a tour centered around a specific theme. This year’s theme is Places of Worship. Exceptional and inspirational places of worship built in the mid-twentieth century exist in nearly every corner of the country. Often they serve as community anchors – “third places” – where people come together to pray, celebrate, and to support one another in times of need. For many, these sites uplift and inspire regardless of religious affiliation or denomination. cf3 is a friend member of Docomomo USA and we’re excited to partner with Mount St. Joseph University for this year’s tour day!

Join us Saturday, October 11th as we explore Mater Dei Chapel at Mt. St. Joseph University.

Completed in 1962, the chapel was designed by six women—three Sisters of Charity and three undergraduate art students at a time when women were all but absent from leadership roles in the professional worlds of architecture, art, and design.

In March 2024, the Chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was recognized for its historical and cultural significance as the first chapel created by all women in the 1960s, and as the only one created by faculty and undergraduate students at a US Catholic college or university -- as well as for its architectural value, in the mid-century modern style.
