July 16 - Miller House Tour
designed by Eero Saarinen in Columbus, IN.
We're all looking forward to cf3's first-ever road trip to Columbus, Ind., and private tour of Eero Saarinen-designed home for J. Irwin Miller and family. Design and construction on the Miller House took four years and was completed in 1957.The home was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2000.The Miller family owned the home until 2008 when Xenia Miller, the last resident of the home, died. In 2009, the home and gardens, along with many of the original furnishings, were donated to the Indianapolis Museum of Art by members of the Miller family. In addition to Eero Saarinen, the house and gardens showcases the work of leading 20th-century figures such as interior designer Alexander Girard, landscape architect Dan Kiley, and principal design associate at the Saarinen office, Kevin Roche.

We are departing July 16 promptly at 8:30 am and will return to Cincinnati by 6:00 pm. The motor coach will be parked on Rawson Woods Lane (opposite Frank Lloyd Wright's Boulter House) at 8:00 for boarding. Please park on Middleton and meet on Rawson Woods Lane at the bus.

August 12 – September 15, 2011 - Explore Modernism in Cincinnati at the Betts House
Cincinnati Modern Architecture – A Retrospective , explores the impact of mid-century design on Cincinnati’s built environment. An opening reception will be held August 12, 2011 from 5 – 8 pm.

In addition to a wealth of nineteenth century architecture, Cincinnati is also home to numerous modernist buildings and residences. The exhibit examines several local iconic twentieth-century architectural treasures, including Terrace Plaza Hotel and Greenhills. The work of celebrated modernist architects, including Abrom Dombar, Woodie Garber, and Carl Strauss, is also explored.

The exhibit is on loan from the modernist architecture organization Cincinnati Form Follows Function (CF3). CF3 created the exhibit in collaboration with the Cincinnati Preservation Association, Enriching Spaces, and the Greenhills Historical Society.

Cincinnati Modern Architecture – A Retrospective can be seen Tuesday through Thursday, 11 am – 2 pm, at the Betts House, as well as the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, 12:30 - 5 pm. Project support for this exhibit is provided by a grant from ArtsWave.

ABOUT THE BETTS HOUSE - Built in 1804, the Betts House, Ohio’s oldest brick house, is located in the Betts-Longworth Historic District near downtown Cincinnati. The Betts House is a museum dedicated to the built environment offering exhibits and programs on architecture, historic preservation, building trades and construction technologies. The Betts House is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm; the second and fourth Saturday of each month, 12:30 – 5 pm; and other days and times by appointment. From Chuck Lohre's response to Steve Rosen's email requesting a post party wrap up of the event, ""It was hot. Our guests thought I had spilled my drink all over myself but it was sweat! At least there was a breeze blowing. We had about 50 come by and hope to do it again in the Fall. I even got the young kids in neighborhood to volunteer to get their band to play. Not sure if Susan Rissover's kid's chamber music would work or the heavy metal the kids said they played. "They can do something softer," one mentioned. We'll see. Not much grilling went on but everyone brought a picnic dinner and plenty of things to swap. All the old regulars were there and it seemed like a family reunion. What a crowd. Thanks again for the great article, one person "Just happened" to Google "Mid-century Modern in Cincinnati" that morning and you popped up. Hard to believe the way we communicate these days. I hope to get some photos to put on the site. Wendy, please send a few to me. I forgot to snap any. Thanks again for everyones help. It was fun, easy and could grow. We could even have the next one at the Park Board HQ, the north end has a nice porch, or the Trail-side building in Burnet Woods. All by Carl Freund."

The PM magazine segment played rather continuously and then Chuck loaded up the footage -- it actually had a bit of an beginning, middle and end."

We'll use daylight hours for the  swap meet and eats, accompanied by the exclusive screening of a documentary film detailing construction of FLW's home for Gerald Tonkens, which will be shown continuously until 9:30 p.m. Thanks to Beverly Tonkens Vangrov, who has graciously offered cf3ers this exciting and rare opportunity to see and hear Mr. Tonkens discuss construction of his home -- one the finest examples of Wright's Usonian residences in the country according to Wright himself -- and the only one ever documented on film.
