As the Queen City's first group devoted to the awareness, education and preservation of modern design - CF3 Cincinnati Form Follows Function - presents this look back at some of the city's outstanding 20th century architectural treasures.

From its world-class Art Deco Union Terminal train station to the many mid-century homes tucked into its seven hillsides, Cincinnati is blessed with a rich tradition of modern architectural design.  The CF3 curated exhibit includes both images and artifacts.  The organization's efforts to document and preserve have included homes designed by such international stars as Frank Lloyd Wright and George Nelson as well as dwellings by homegrown favorites Abe Dombar, Woodie Garber, Ray Roush and Carl Strauss.

Members are invited to bring their modern decoratives to enhance the exhibit much as cf3 did at the first showing of the display. Evite invitation.

Boulter House Oral History Video Online PDF Print E-mail
The Oral History Project was started by former Cincinnati Preservation Association Director Bobbie McTurner. Bruce Goetzman and Ken Hughes volunteered to be interviewed regarding the preservation of the home by David and Miriam Gosling. The home was built in 1956 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Chuck Lohre, Brian Pierson, Gordon Morioka, Erin Adams and Patrick Snadon helped with the development and production. Another editing is planned with addtional content and wide angle video footage. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks to everyone for their help and encouragement. View the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Yx9-T1xws

Learn more about the Cincinnati Preservation Association and the Modern Committee which is looking for a chairperson to reengage the Committee. Plans were to do one of the other two Wright homes as the next production in the series. July 24, 2010 - Bellevue Hill Park Cookout, Swap Meet and Movie PDF Print E-mail

From Chuck Lohre's response to Steve Rosen's email requesting a post party wrap up of the event, ""It was hot. Our guests thought I had spilled my drink all over myself but it was sweat! At least there was a breeze blowing. We had about 50 come by and hope to do it again in the Fall. I even got the young kids in neighborhood to volunteer to get their band to play. Not sure if Susan Rissover's kid's chamber music would work or the heavy metal the kids said they played. "They can do something softer," one mentioned. We'll see. Not much grilling went on but everyone brought a picnic dinner and plenty of things to swap. All the old regulars were there and it seemed like a family reunion. What a crowd. Thanks again for the great article, one person "Just happened" to Google "Mid-century Modern in Cincinnati" that morning and you popped up. Hard to believe the way we communicate these days. I hope to get some photos to put on the site. Wendy, please send a few to me. I forgot to snap any. Thanks again for everyones help. It was fun, easy and could grow. We could even have the next one at the Park Board HQ, the north end has a nice porch, or the Trail-side building in Burnet Woods. All by Carl Freund."
From Janet Groeber's response, In all, probably 50 folks came around with their picnics and stuff to sell.  I swapped for a solar fan for books, while others made cash deals. The PM magazine segment played rather continuously and then Chuck loaded up the footage -- it actually had a bit of an beginning, middle and end."
I'd say it was a success and the CityBeat article def made a difference!

Original invitation: Grab your chairs, throw a grill and bbq fare in the trunk and get ready for cf3's first cookout and swap meet at Bellevue Hill Park, Cincinnati Park Board site. Gather at 6:00 p.m. near the mushroom-shaped concrete pergolas -- the design of R. Carl Freund, a local architect clearly influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. Here's your opportunity to clear your basement, garage and closets and search out fellow cf3ers' stuff to buy, sell or trade. Got extra hardware from a finished project, or architectural salvage perfect for another application? Bring em to the meet. Maybe you'll decide to swap your books on architecture for a set of vintage dinnerware, or an iconic MCM chair. Sky's the limit! We'll use daylight hours for the  swap meet and eats, accompanied by the exclusive screening of a documentary film detailing construction of FLW's home for Gerald Tonkens, which will be shown continuously until 9:30 p.m. Thanks to Beverly Tonkens Vangrov, who has graciously offered cf3ers this exciting and rare opportunity to see and hear Mr. Tonkens discuss construction of his home -- one the finest examples of Wright's Usonian residences in the country according to Wright himself -- and the only one ever documented on film. Go to the Evite http://tiny.cc/p3dsc to let us know you are coming and to be added to our general list.
